Looking forward to understanding more thank you
Do you happen to nkow if this anthology lhas anything on Zeus’s more earthly biography? — where and when he began his career as a god and the spread of the cult?
If not, any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jason
Historical issues aren’t much of a focus in that volume. I think that if one can find it, A. B. Cook’s monumental Zeus: A Study in Ancient Religion still has much of value in it, as long as one treads lightly on some of the outdated theoretical superstructure. For something current, though I haven’t looked at it myself, one might try the volume on Zeus in Routledge’s Gods and Heroes of the Ancient World series.
Appreciate it.
I have one follow-up question: If I could get only one volume of Cook and I was far more interested in the oriigns of the Zeus cult and its early development, which volume should I get?
The problem is that Cook doesn’t organize his work temporally, but thematically; hence volume 1 is about Zeus as “God of the Bright Sky”, while volume 2 concerns Zeus as God of thunder and lightning, and volume 3 Zeus in connection with “earthquakes, clouds, wind, dew, rain, and meteorites.” You can have a look at some of the volumes on archive.org: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Zeus%3A%20A%20Study%20in%20Ancient%20Religion%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts
I get you; thanks.
